Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami(海啸),adding weight to

ideas they pos-sess a “sixth sense” for disasters, experts said on Thursday. Sri Lanka

wildlife officials have said the giant waves that killed over 24,000 people along the Indian

0-cean island's coast seemingly missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found. “No

elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit. I think animals can sense disaster.

They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening,” H. D. Ratnayake,

deputy director of Sri Lanka's Wildlife Department, said on Wednesday. The waves

washed floodwaters up to 3 km (2 miles) inland at Yala National Park in the southeast, Sri

Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants."There has been a

lot of evro snoitpure cinaclov erofeb gnitargim sdrib ro gnikrab sgod tuoba ecnediֹ

earthquakes. But it has not been proven," said Matthew van Lierop, an animal behaviour

specialist at Johannesburg Zoo. “There have been no specific studies because you can't

really test it in a lab or field setting£,” he said.Other authorities agreed with this

conclusion. “Wildlife seem to be able to pick up certain phenomenon, especially birds.

There are many reports of birds detecting coming disasters,” said Clive Walker, who has

written several books on African wildlife. Animals certainly rely on the known senses

such as smell or hearing to avoid danger such as predators (食肉动物) The idea of an

animal" sixth sense" is a lasting one that the evidence on Sri Lanka's damaged coast is

  likely to add to.

The physicians in a hospital form the center of medical staff. But they could not provide

effective medi-cal care to their patients without the help of numerous other medical

employees. From the viewpoint of the patients, the nursing staff is particularly important.

Nurses are usually in close contact with patients as long as they are in the hospital. A

nurse does not study for as many years as a doctor. However, each must be equally

dedicated. Ca-ring for sick persons requires a great deal of patience and concern. Most

nurses work long days, and they of-ten must work at odd hours or during the night.

have lunch with him,you may say something like this,"I'm afraid it'll be somewhere

cheap, as I have very little money. " Then he may say, "OK,I'll meet you at McDonald's.

"This means that the two agree to go Dutch, that is, each person pays for himself. He may

also say,"Oh, no. I want to take you to lunch at Smith's," or "I want you to try the

Chinese dumplings there. They are great." This means the person wants to pay for both of

you. If you feel friendly towards this person, you can go with him and you needn't pay for

the meal. You may just say,"Thank you. That would be very nice." American customs

about who pays for dates(约会) are much the same as in other parts of the world. In the old

days, American women wanted men to pay for all the meals. But today, a university girl or a

woman in the business world will usually pay for what they have during the day. If a man

asks her for a dance out-side the working hours, it means "come, as my guest." So as you

As the world watched the twin towers of the World Trade Center come under attack, a

common phrase was repeated: “It looks like a movie”.But this time there was no

superman to save the people or the famous building. The at tack destroyed one of

the highest skyscrapers and left 5,000 dead or missing. Movie fans have become used to

such events after years of Hollywood films showing disasters, terrorism and danger.

The Empire State Building, the White House, New York City and even the American

president himself have all been threatened (威胁) by terrorist attacks in these exciting films.

The film “True Lies”, released in 1994 is considered to be a good example of this kind of

movie. The special effects, including explosions and missiles, make the action look like a

real thing. “Independence Day” in 1996 took this type of movie one step further by

blowing up the White House. This science fiction (科幻) movie is about a war between

human beings and aliens from another planet. In the movie, the World Trade Center

Towers are destroyed. Violence has become a major part of Hollywood movies. And this

is what people enjoy. Soon after the attacks, many famous film companies stopped the
